2002, former trainees of Dr. Herbert L. Fred established The
Medical Society, Inc.—a public charity exempt from Federal
income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Its mission is four-fold:
1) To relieve human suffering by donating its proceeds
to MÉDECINS SANS FRONTIÉRES (MSF)/DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS, awarded
the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize. MSF is an international
independent medical humanitarian group—a
qualifying 501(c)(3) organization—delivering emergency aid to people affected
by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters, or
exclusions from health care in more than 70 countries.
2) To honor Dr. Fred for
a half century of bedside teaching. He has had a positive impact on the lives (personal and professional) of numerous physicians and other healthcare workers. His unique style of teaching has allowed his trainees to reap a rich harvest of knowledge, wisdom, and self-confidence.
3) To have a semi-annual gathering of its members in which they can
meet old friends and make new ones, reminisce about patients seen 50 years or 5 days
earlier, discuss current events
(medical and otherwise), and catch up on personal lives during a nice dinner.
4) To feature at each meeting a renowned speaker on a medical topic of interest to a diverse audience—professional and lay.
